The Secret Superpower

By Bhavya Mehta

I started wearing glasses when I was 12,

and you know what the doctors don’t tell you when that happens?

They don’t tell you about your new superpower,

your power to take off the glasses and blur the world

you do not wish to see!

And the day I found about it,

I did just that!

I grew up sitting on a bench

looking at people from afar,

smiled my best smile. And my superpower?

Well, that stayed a secret for a long time

And Oh! How I made good use of it,

celebrating my forsaken existence

with confetti and some salt

Until mother earth started turning slowly

and I started seeing more clearly..

in my blurred vision and sharp ears,

A bird whispered,

“It’s okay love, your world is beautiful again.

You can put your glasses back on.”
