The Return

I’ve felt depressed before.

That’s why I recognise it so quickly, like a relative who used to change your diapers as a kid. And I don’t know why he’s here. Mr D. Pression.

He knocked on my door late last night and I suppose I let him in because I was lonely. The kind of lonely where your bones and skin and breaths feel painfully singular.

He stood there and said: “Come into my arms,” in a seductive voice that dropped to a whisper as he said: “I’ll never let you go.”

It sounded nice.

Because this body that I lived in for so long was becoming heavier by the day. I could feel the bone in each limb.

So, when he offered to hold me, wouldn’t it be foolish not to accept?

Even though we’ve been down this road before… and it started the same as every other time, with a smile and a promise and a cold warmth.

But familiarity houses nostalgia, and nostalgia houses love, and damn it if that’s not all I wanted in the world.

So, I walked into his arms,

Sniffed his chest,

And cried for two weeks.
