The Red Moon
A story forgotten over the ages, told in medieval times and born out of pure malice, a child of destiny was abandoned. Under the moon of red, beneath the tree of the vanquished, destiny was rescued.
Helpless, the child crawled beneath the dangling feet of its mutilated mother. Crows began to peck at its face, forcing guttural cries from its malnourished body. Blood ran down the entirety of its figure as the pitch-black sky was filled with the bloody hue of the moon. At that moment, a woman's scream could be heard. Mud muffled her steps as the stench of decaying organs immediately filled her nose.
Glancing down beneath a puddle of blood and guts, she discovered the child. Tearing a part of her dress, she gently picked up the infant while covering its beaten body in rags. Shouting filled her ears as her husband ordered her to return immediately to the wooden carriages, of which there were around forty, all of which had stopped only for her brief rescue attempt.
Women in her carriage felt nothing but fear for the mystery child. Many of them were visibly taken aback by her stupidity, while others whispered tales of curses such babies bear. It was nothing more than a bad omen, another infant that would eventually become a corpse in this rotten land. After all … children rarely survive wars.
Her husband wore the coldest expression. The face of a murderer whom she had failed many times. Women said to have as many miscarriages as she did were labelled as witches, hags, or worse yet, demons. This was indeed her last chance to bring him what he yearned for, a son. Even if this child brought nothing but ill fortune, at least the child was safe. However, before she could finish her thought, the shadow of her husband was seen leaving their carriage, disgusted by what she was dragging with her. The child, a beaten bundle of intestines and flesh, was to be her solace.
Streaks of red filled the interior of the carriage. Wood creaked as the carriages swayed - winds blew cool air through tarps made to be makeshift covers, and her lullaby began. It is said a moon of this nature occurs only after lives have been lost and blood has seeped through soils once inhabited.
A child must feel warmth to radiate purity, know safety to provide protection, and experience love to purge evil. But a child stripped of kindness shall open their eyes to the world’s cruel reality before ever feeling love. No child should experience it, yet it was necessary to battle what was beyond the moon.
