The Ravens That Ramble

Original Submission by Alexandra Masters

The Ravens That Ramble

We left our nests young.

We were two birds of a feather.

We shed our baby down,

And learned early to be clever.

In oak branches we sat,

Shooting the breeze to the shade.

We rode the dying Zephyrs

Til the dread of night came.

So, I'll meet you in the woods

With the Ravens that ramble

Sit beneath the evergreens

Eat berries from the brambles

We'll stay until the eve bleeds

Dark, black and dreary

Counting blackbirds til

Our young eyes grow weary

We no longer sit in branches

Frankly we haven't spoken a word.

The Zephyrs let us drift apart

And they've left our lines blurred.

Still I'll meet you in the woods

With the Ravens that ramble

Sit beneath the evergreens

Play card games and gamble

Stay until the eve bleeds

Dark, black and dreary

Counting blackbirds til

Our wilted eyes grow weary.

Still I'll keep until with you

As you run this ruined world.

I'll tally up your truths

And I'll take your solemn word.

It's been ages since we sat

In the branches of an oak tree.

Shooting the breeze to shadows,

Riding the Zephyrs wild and free.

I would have met you in the woods,

With the Ravens that ramble.

We would have sat beneath the evergreens,

And joke like our lives weren't in shambles.

We'd stay until the eve bled

Dark, black and dreary.

Counting blackbirds til

Our jaded eye grew weary.
