the puppet

i was a child with sunlight in my hair

but you taught me how shadows taste

you said i was special

that the world wouldn’t understand me

you told me that you did

you understood me

and i believed you

because my world was falling apart right in front of my eyes

and you were the only one who made me feel seen

so i learned to trust you

you dressed your lies in kindness

like candy laced with poison

you made me feel chosen

while you were only tightening your grip

each word twisting the strings around my wrists

each touch taking something you never asked for

and i thought nothing of it

because you made nothing feel normal

until i couldn’t remember

where my choices ended and your words began

you built a world where i was small enough to hold in your fist

and you made it feel like love

so i just leaned into you more

i became vulnerable

but now every mirror shows me

the puppet you left behind

and no matter how hard i scrub

you’re still under my nails

behind my eyelids

curled inside my breathing

and i hate

that part of me still calls it love

and wonders if your hands were ever actually warm.
