The Polite Servant

The polite servant first waits patiently,

face down on the table,

hiding its motives as priorities,

It lives like a whore of attention.

Seducing every wandering thought,

waiting for a brief moment of boredom,

a tiny crack in effort and attention

to enter as a thief, eager to please.

Quietly rearranging the room,

speaking fluently of the world,

silencing the urgings of

a dying body trying to breathe.

It devours gently:

mind, body, and time,

Until the pauses grow longer,

the questions grow fewer,

the silences grow louder.

Yet until two people’s mutual muteness

starts to grow,

letting them forget the language

they once knew

and still pretend to know.
