The Point

A Tribute to my Aunt Marian Bow 1945-2024

Staring out over the Iconic Point

On a windy, winter’s day,

I felt the betraying sting of burning tears

Reminding me of regrets as I sat again, in Mossel Bay

Unsteady, knuckles white; mind processing the ebb and flow of my sorrow

My forlorn feelings were sinking ships

Body wilting in the Suzuki Jimny

While my Resilience pleaded with me: “Don’t you dare come adrift!”

The seagulls ducked and dived, my eyes unseeing

When, quite suddenly- I saw an image

That left me utterly stunned:

A real woman, in front of me, depicting a painting you would have done

Gazing at the back of her wide-brimmed cover

As she gazed upon the ocean, wide and blue

The straw hat crown dome-like, surrounded by flowers

……staggering memories……

Of the two compositions you loved the most

Floral still-lifes and the *Rϋckenfigur trope

Recalling visiting this same place back then

When you left us; that engulfing time of grief

Now - a small smile played across my lips

Listening to the splish-splash of the waves, I knew you spirit was at peace.

*a famous art-related term often used in German Romanticism, meaning: figure as seen from behind
