FIGHTING THE FIRE DRAGON

A thin tendril of smoke curls

As the wind fans it upwards

The dragon stirs in its sleep

Small sparks spatter

Igniting trees and bushes

As the dragon unfolds his wings

Gathering its strength

The wind screams its song

Flames lick and leap hungrily

Consuming all in its path

The fire gathers speed

Opening its arms, gathering its harvest

The dragon, bent on destruction

Breathes its fiery heat over the forest

As trees die before its onslaught

Thick grey smoke billows

Coupling with the fire

While the dragon shouts out his fury

They fight bravely

Coughing, dousing, hacking, cutting

Sweat pouring from their muscled bodies

Into the night the dragon battles

Roaring red, hot breath over all

Refusing to die

In combat throughout the night

Sooty, red eyes burning

The firefighters wage war

As dawn penetrates the smog

The dragon falters and dies

Ending his rule of terror
