The Maze

The kitchen was silent, save for the whistling kettle. Elena stepped downstairs and picked up her coffee cup, taking a slow sip until the landline telephone cut through the quiet.

She lifted the heavy receiver.

"Listen carefully," a gravelly voice grumbled from the other side. "Do you recognize my voice? If not, try remembering July 20th, 2018."

The line clicked dead.

Panic seizing her, Elena dropped the phone and raced upstairs. She dug out her old diary, frantically flipping to the final entry. Her breath caught. She glanced up at the faded calendar on the wall—it showed the exact same date and year.

In the freezing silence, the truth hit her. She wasn’t making morning coffee. She had died in a car crash eight years ago today.
