The day sopranos suffocated, tenors tormented,

basses bathed in blood, and altos alienated

as violin strings bled,

and bow wept for him in mourning.

The harmonium's bellows quit breathing,

and its metal reeds turned to rust.

Flute holes splintered

and forgot the warmth of human breath.

The trumpet valves lost control,

spilling each blown breath as a requiem.

The mridangam and tabla swallowed the fingers that dared touch their mouths,

drumming a relentless ostinato until their skin shattered into shards.

Guitar picks sliced off the fingers

that tried to reach them to caress the strings.

The baton overmastered the maestro,

splintering the dome’s glass as chaotic vibrations escorted his soul skyward.

Seven strings of the veena struck; seven chakras exploded,

prana scattering as fragments of light through the chambers of the soul.

The piano's felted hammers turned to sledgehammers,

vibrations jolting the keys until they popped from their beds.

Jal tarang bowls grew frail-fractured ceramic

showering skin with shards as blood threaded down like the ragas they once played.

Every note he ever penned became disoriented, unleashing itself as a Dies Irae-

a hymn that can only be conducted by God.

The day the atmosphere broke into silence.
