The Lone Wolf

The day broke, and I could feel the sun’s rays piercing through cracks in the wall, laying lips on my flesh. A diagonal, stiff pain crept from my right shoulder to my upper leg as my muscles attempted movement. My reactions seemed slower than usual, as I struggled to stand. Immense pain surged through my body, and I collapsed onto the floor, cursing under my breath. Eyes drifting to the floor, I cursed once more as the deep gash on my shoulder began to pulse, then bleed. Slowly, I opened my satchel bag and rummaged inside until I reached my alchemy supplies. Brewing a potion to stop the bleeding and activating the regeneration process is my only option if I want to get out of this hellhole with both my shoulders intact.

A breeze as bitter as death blew between the structure's cracks, a glacial knife slicing through my well-worn body. I sped up the brewing and took a few swigs of rum to ward off the frost. The warmth didn’t last, and a while later, the potion had finished. I gulped down its contents and felt my veins expand. My wound’s bleeding came to an end as the throbbing faded, and the healing process began. I sighed in relief and started swigging some extra rum. Standing up, I eliminated any sign of my unexpected reservation before I departed. Attracting attention would not bode well for me in this wretched place.

With a shaky grasp, I opened the ramshackle door. The decaying carcass of my mutilated horse lay close to the thicket of the forest 50 yards from the structure. I could see the hilt of my sword sticking out beneath the horse’s ribs. Teeth gritting against each other, my feet dragged through the snow until I reached my mare. I crouched down, stuck my left hand under its ribs, and lifted the horse’s side. My hand grazed the sword hilt and closed around it in a delayed movement, and the sword easily slipped from beneath the weight.

With the scabbard still attached, I threw it over my back and tied it across my left shoulder to my right oblique. The pain had diminished, but it still stung somewhat, and the light-yellow glow of the midday sun amid the trees was subtle. Thus, carrying my sword strung across my back, I disappeared amidst the trees, awaiting yet another echoing scream.
