The Lighthouse That Mistook Ships for Stars

At the edge of the world,

I stood alone.

A tower of stone

surrounded by water,

my only companion

the endless conversation

between waves

and wind.

Every night,

I opened my eye

and released my light

into the darkness.

People called me

a guide.

A promise.

A reason

for lost ships

to find their way home.

I believed them.

I thought my purpose

was simple:

to shine.

So I counted every vessel

that passed beneath me.

The ships that arrived safely.

The ships that disappeared

before morning.

The sailors who looked up

and whispered thanks

to a light

they would never meet.

I wondered

if they understood

what it meant

to stand still

for an entire lifetime

while everyone else

was allowed

to leave.

Sometimes,

the darkness felt endless.

Sometimes,

my light seemed too small

to challenge an ocean.

I watched storms swallow

ships larger than me.

I watched waves rise

higher than my walls.

And for the first time,

I wondered:

What if I am not enough?

What if the people I guide

only survive

because the sea is merciful?

What if my little flame

has never truly mattered?

Years passed.

The paint on my walls faded.

The glass around my light

grew older.

The world changed

while I remained.

Then one evening,

a ship stopped

beneath me.

The sailor who stepped onto shore

was old.

Older than the waves.

Older than the stories

people told about me.

He looked up

at my tower

and smiled.

"I thought I was following

a lighthouse," he said.

"But I was wrong."

I waited.

He looked toward the ocean.

"I was following the reason

to keep sailing."

And suddenly,

I understood.

I had spent my whole life

believing

I was the one

saving the ships.

I never realized

the ships were saving me.

Every journey completed.

Every person returned.

Every small light

seen through the storm.

They were proof

that darkness

had never been

the only thing

that existed.

So I continue.

Night after night.

Not because

I can defeat the ocean.

Not because

I can stop the storms.

Not because

every ship

will find its way home.

But because somewhere,

someone may be searching

for a light.

And somewhere,

someone may need

to know

that even in the middle

of the darkest water,

there is still

something

waiting

to be found.
