Can we imagine life on Earth without the Sun—the brightest star that wakes most of us every morning (with due respect to the late risers)? It seems impossible. Yet, imagine waking up one day to discover that the Sun will never rise again.
Darkness would engulf the world 24 hours a day. Life as we know it would come to a standstill. The hourglass of time itself would seem to turn upside down. At first, people would feel shocked, helpless, and devastated. But if this phenomenon continued for a long time, humanity would eventually adapt to it. Difficult as it may be, we would get used to the new reality because there would be no alternative.
Human beings have an extraordinary ability to adapt. We are accustomed to our surroundings because they have shaped us from the moment we opened our eyes. If we had been born into a world of complete darkness, we would know nothing of light. Likewise, if there were only light and no darkness, we would accept that as normal too.
This brings us to the concept of adaptability.
We adapt ourselves to the circumstances in which we are born and raised. A person born into poverty learns to live with limited resources, while someone born into wealth becomes accustomed to comfort and privilege. We become what we are taught, and we absorb the values, habits, and beliefs of our environment.
As our circumstances change, our lives change as well. Though the transition may be difficult, we gradually adjust to new realities. Yet there is one thing that remains constant—the light within us.
No matter what challenges we face, the inner light continues to guide us. Each of us possesses the power to illuminate not only our own life but also the lives of others through positivity, courage, and determination.
What if there were no light on Earth? What if I were physically challenged? What if I were poor? The light within would still show the way forward.
This inner light is nothing but self-realization.
Much of life depends on our perception. If we focus only on darkness and despair, the world will appear gloomy. If we cultivate contentment, gratitude, and hope, the world will seem brighter. Trials and tribulations are an inevitable part of life. Adversity often introduces a person to his or her true self.
The choice is ours. We can allow difficulties to defeat us, or we can transform adversity into opportunity and prosperity. It is up to us to use our experiences to make life meaningful, purposeful, and beautiful.
How do yogis and enlightened individuals attain wisdom? By discovering the power of the light within. Once we realize that we need not constantly search for light outside ourselves, we become capable of shining even in the darkest moments.
When we awaken to the sunshine within, we can illuminate our own path and inspire others to find theirs. No darkness is powerful enough to overcome a person who has discovered the light within.
