The Life I Still Miss 🌷

Original Submission by Ramanpreet kaur

People ask me what I miss about Army life. It was never just the cantonment.

It was the accommodations

that never felt like houses…

they became homes,

filled with laughter, friendships,

and stories that still echo in my heart.

It was the Officers’ Mess,

where every dinner, every celebration, and every farewell

became a memory worth keeping.

It was the parties

where medals shone, sarees flowed gracefully, and every smile carried

a feeling of belonging.

It was the welfare meets, the ladies’ gatherings, the endless cups of tea, shared laughter, and conversations that made

strangers feel like family.

It was climbing into the Army Gypsy, a group of ladies together,

heading to another meet,

another celebration,

another reason to laugh.

It was the get-togethers

that never needed an occasion, because togetherness itself was enough.

It was the unexpected late-night knock…

“Ma’am… we’re here for your

aloo paranthas.”

Young bachelors,

far from their own homes,

finding a little warmth,

a little comfort,

around our dining table.

It was the helpers,

who quietly became part of our everyday lives, sharing our routines, our joys,

and even our difficult days.

Army life taught us

that home is never just four walls.

It is people.

It is belonging.

It is standing together,

through every posting, every farewell, and every new beginning.

Today, the uniforms, the cantonment, and the addresses are all behind me. But every now and then,

my heart still walks

those familiar roads…

Because some lives

are never truly left behind.

They simply become the most beautiful chapter you carry forever.
