The Last Drop

You hand me the last drop

of Death’s Door.

The prelude begins:

a drop of something dangerous.

I pause. It starts spicy,

sharp on the tongue.

In the air, a faint anise;

I taste your voice in the note,

too subtle to fall again

with my riotous, reckless soul.

The glass tingles with ecstasy,

swaying, rocking

against the block.

Ice swirls twice in the spice.

Dreamy music brings

cream and beam to my nose.

When I read your mind in your eyes,

I taste floral and citrus as I rise,

and the restrained affection

grows stronger, deeper,

in my toes.

We are too honest to blend

with a mist of wrong romance.

You are lovely in conversation.

The taste grows better:

clean, mild, bright, sweet.
