The Jazz Club

The Jazz Club

“Let’s meet at the jazz club,”

he proposed to her.

“Let’s meet at the jazz club.”

First date.

Champagne, cocktails, and the dramatic sound

of the trumpet blending with the piano.

He couldn’t stop staring at her,

hoping it wasn’t too obvious,

hoping his desires wouldn’t paint his face.

Wait, they locked eyes for a second.

Or was that second a whole minute or two?

What just happened?

Who was she looking at?

Her date or someone else?

Her stomach turned.

What just happened?

Was she already in love with her date,

or was she falling for the trumpet player

who was still looking right into her eyes?

No, no, it couldn’t be possible.

“This happens only in the movies,” she thought.

She looked at him once again,

trying to figure out his desires.

He was still there, playing those obsessive melodies,

still there, staring into her eyes.

She woke up the next morning,

his trumpet resting beside the bed.

She looked into his hazel eyes and said to him:

“Let’s meet once again at the jazz club.”
