THE HOUSE THAT LEARNED YOUR NAME
One step, two,
skip the floorboard to the left
methodically move
across space occupied
unseen
a too-short pencil navigating
across sheet music for a piano
silenced.
Walking through rooms
sideways, two steps right,
sideways again
soft enough not to disturb
the rest between notes.
Mastering the art
of avoidance;
not that cupboard
not today
not soon.
The living room blooms,
the kitchen sings,
the hallway counts
one step, two,
skip the floorboard to the left
find shelter.
Stay.
Her eyes turn inward,
they’ve gone elsewhere;
the hallway takes its cue,
she’s adrift in her cloud
and this is where she will
Stay.
The static in the house
prepares itself
for another rehearsal,
quietly counting syllables
before the floorboard creaks.
