The hour

It all matters.

Every word. Every sentence. Every page.

My palms were damp as I tightened my grip around the pen. The paper beneath my hands was already marked with my thoughts, my hopes, my mistakes. My pen hovered over the final line, only an inch from the end.

I looked at the clock. Forty-three minutes gone. My other hand continued its merciless journey around my face. I bent over the page again. My handwriting became faster. Words poured from my mind like water from a broken fountain, spilling across the paper before I could stop them. I could hear nothing but the scratching of my pen and the faint ticking above me.

This was my only chance. For years, I had imagined this moment. I had always imagined in the future to stand for justice, helping others who couldn’t stand for themselves, doing what was lawfully right. I had imagined the life waiting for me on the other side of this exam. But dreams seemed very far away when there was only one paper, one hour and one goal.

I looked up again. Fifty-two minutes. The clock kept ticking. Every word I wrote felt like another step towards my future — or another step away from it. My heart pounded harder. My fingers tightened around the pen. There was no going back. The months of studying, the early mornings, the sleepless nights, the pages of notes, the sacrifices, they had all led to this one hour.

This one hour.

I forced myself to breathe calmly and continued writing. The final sentence. The final word. My pen stopped. For a moment, I stared at the page. Then— the bell rang. I froze. It was over.

Slowly I placed my pen on the table. My hand felt strangely light without it. I took a deep breath. For the first time in an hour, my mind was quiet.

I handed over my paper. As I walked away, I looked back at the clock. It was still ticking. It had never stopped. And neither would life.

I had spent on hour trying to write my future. Now, all I could do was wait.

The hour was gone.
