THE HIBISCUS

--------

There it grew,

smiling in my backyard-

a hibiscus that I planted

last summer.

I saw a bud on it today after weeks of care-giving.

As the bud peeped

through it’s cocoon

the color was magnificent.

As if nature made its own sunset- a crimson sky.

The bud danced

with the wind

yet, incomplete.

A few days later

a flower bloomed

out of it’s cocoon

big and blossoming.

The next day,

as I peeped through my window

to bless my eyes,

there it was- a fallen angel.

The plant kissed the earth

where it grew,

but the flower bloomed

as brightly as it ever did.

A beauty.

What a beauty,

I thought, if not

letting the plant stand upright.

I enjoyed looking at

my backyard being completed by this hibiscus.

I plucked the flower,

the misery, out of its own home

and gave the plant

a cane to stand upright.

What is the plant

without it’s flower?

Like a name without a meaning,

like sunset without the sun- an incomplete tragedy.

But, as I arranged the

flower up on my desk

a question was what remained-

is beauty ever enough?
