The Harvest of Her Words

The drought-defying plumes of red and brown,

Where mabele stands proud beneath the sun,

Became the quiet classroom of the village,

Where Granny taught me how the fields were won.

She taught my hands to test the heavy grain,

An ancient wealth that laughs at summer heat;

She knew the secrets hidden in the rain,

And walked the red earth with her weathered feet.

The birds no longer steal the feathered seed,

The iron pots of ting have grown so cold;

Yet from the soil of every daily need,

Her crimson lessons bloom as days unfolds.

Though time has cut the stalk and cleared the plain,

Within my heart, her roots and grains remain.
