The Fall

One hundred years it took her

To reach up to the sun

And yet within mere minutes

Was that patient growth undone

She heard the cold saw growling

Its sharp blade drawing near

Threats ripping through the forest

“There is work to be done here”

Her brothers and her sisters

Had all gone the day before

Their quick demise the fruit of

Humans always wanting more

The creatures in her branches fled

As she began to weep

For she was bound firm to the ground

By roots that ran too deep

She whispered softly through her bark

Aged wisdom in her voice

“You’ll always take more than you need

From those who have no choice”

Her resin bled upon the earth

Her shadow lost in death

The sawdust raining down on her

As she took her last breath

Surrender to the looming fall

Was all that she could do

As she came crashing down, she pledged

That someday, so will you

When all is lost and all is gone

With nowhere left to run

That’s when you’ll slow down long enough

To realise what you’ve done
