POEM 1 for Hashtag Kalakar

THE CUSP

I hesitate.

A familiar past

Lay unravelled in its broken glory.

A misread love letter.

A rusting medal in a blue velvet box.

A silk saree carrying the

Scent of protection.

An unspoken abuse.

A half-eaten tiramisu.

A damp towel carelessly strewn

On the bed.

A box of condoms. Ribbed.

Salty coconut chutney.

Priceless desires.

I could bundle them up in my

Green double bedsheet.

Tie it up in a double knot.

They won’t be able to escape.

I look ahead.

The Sun winks through the trees.

The kingfisher flits

From one branch to the next.

The birdcalls screech louder.

Just do it, they scream.

My fingers tremble.

The doorknob is a tad cold.

I twist it to the right.

Fight the urge to look behind.

A fresh start awaits.

From clothes to values.

I get to choose new ones.

I don’t need the green bedsheet.

Or the items in it.

You see, the fit was never perfect.

I seek perfect.

I hesitate. Again.

What if perfect is an illusion?

My grip on the doorknob loosens.

I look to the forest for answers.

A yellow leaf falls gracefully to the ground.

Swaying and gliding to the rhythm of the woods.

It knew when it was time.

It was ready for the next.

Surrender, my dear.

The forest had spoken.

She gives without restraint.

Love and wisdom.

With a firm resolve

I open the door.

A gush of wind hugged me.
