The Crown Slips

Original Submission by Avani Shinde

Everyone has it coming,

Tonight or in 10 years

The moment we lose it all

The moment we must rebuild

The day the music dies

The day the sun burns most

The day we say goodbye

The day we lose it all

The day our crown slips

Will start like any other

You will sip your first coffee

Then take a long shower

Then you will look outside

Something will seem off

Not the clouds and not the sun

It's not your elderly neighbour or her cat

You dread the outcomes

You realise what went wrong

Down on your knees, you will fall

You will be stuck, no one to call

Drowning in the fear

Burning in the understanding of a risk taken too far

You will wonder why and what you did

To make the crown slip

For a while all will be dark

Liars will say they're there for you

Don't believe them

You do not need them

Then forget what happened

It will be hard, but you must

You shall start again and rise again

This time knowing what not to do

This time you will succeed

You may fall again

And again, again, again

But you will rise, and rise, and rise

When the crown slips

It will shatter on the ground

But you will make a new one

While moving on from the old
