The Birth of a Mother

I saw my sweetest darling there,

My mother, loving, kind, and fair.

I thought I knew what mothers do,

Yet much remained I never knew.

For how is motherhood begun?

Not when she holds her newborn son.

It starts before the child can see,

Within her heart’s expectancy.

With patient hope she waits each day,

As life unfolds its gentle way.

She longs to hold a soul so dear,

Whose voice she has not yet could hear.

Before the child is brought to light,

A mother rises, shining bright.

Before the baby’s first sweet cry,

Her loving self is born nearby.

She treasures every little sign,

Each movement felt, each grand design.

The stretches, kicks, and tiny leaps,

The precious life she safely keeps.

The punches, hiccups, playful rolls,

The growing bond between two souls.

She listens to the heartbeat’s song,

And dreams of meeting it before long.

Within her womb, both vast and warm,

A miracle begins to form.

She nurtures life with tender care,

And wraps it daily in her prayer.

She grows as grows the child inside,

With faith and love her constant guide.

She feeds, protects, and gently tends,

On her devotion all depends.

She lays aside her wants and ease,

Her fleeting comforts and her pleas.

She gives herself in countless ways,

Long before the baby’s days.

For motherhood is not a role

That starts when birth has reached its goal.

It blooms in sacrifice and grace,

And finds within the heart its place.

So now I know, and now I see,

The mother living deep in me.

For before a child greets earth above,

A mother is born through selfless love.
