The Anomalous Figure

By Sia Mishra

Nobody knew what it was

not a human, but of course.

It never blinked, it never moved,

just stood in the corner where it stood.

It arrived when everyone was deep asleep,

except me the night owl devoid of sleep.

Right at the moment I went to bed,

it remembered to show its gloomy head.

With what a suffering he was marred;

that had left his pale skin completely charred.

The eyes glowed from yellow to red,

Leaving any watcher in a morbid dread.

But when I rubbed my eyes and came back to sense,

I saw the whole room with his absence:

I couldn’t distinguish whether it was a dream,

a real-life happening, or another realm.

Since then I could not sleep alone at night,

no matter how hard I tried with all my might.

Thinking this happened only in absence of light,

I took a short nap in bright daylight.

I was in the land of Nod,

unaware what would happen was completely odd;

as I turned in my bed towards the right,

I saw him lying beside me upright.
