The Almost Blues

-He was no Apollo, and I was no Daphne- but still, the almost was enough to lose.-

Chase me like sunlight, and I ran like a prey, rooted in my own damn choice, not knowing if that was brave.

Feet that knew the ground too well, a season that forgot its name- eager metal, dull and bright, and the spark of sharp unrequited flame.

In the fleeting time of radiant glow, these feet stilled in the roots. The running stopped, not by choice- the tremble of leaves, the splash of waves listening, loud at the footfall of memory.

Your fingers that I never held against mine, your lips that I wished I could trace with my fingers. Branches reached out to nothing, leaves whispering rhythm into odes of silence- silence that I should’ve never left behind.

We stand at the purgatory of what we were supposed to be- from no labels to lets see where it goes. Limbo of connection, blurred haunting of distance.

A crown of great honor and hollow moments strung together- swift, breathless, and unbearably silent.

That’s the almost, close enough to lose.
