That old book

I know that my new story

Is only just being born

That I need to close this tattered book

Pages aged, yellowing and torn

That for some doors to open

There are those that need to be shut

But sometimes I feel this heartache

Deep within my gut

I know that it’s a blessing

That there really is no other way

But confliction still gnaws away at me

And has found a place to stay

We’ve reached the final chapter

The ending not quite what we had planned

Nostalgia and disappointment

Grabbing on tightly, like a child clutching its mother’s hand

I place the book upon my shelf

A place where I know it will gather dust

I’ll pick it up, I’ll put it down

I’ll stare at it fondly, but only if I must

But I cannot read that old book again

With the story that I long outgrew

I reach out slowly for a new one,

One who’s pages ink never got to know you
