Straight White Collars

By Anushka Saha

The world says, "Honesty prevails, child!"

Soon we learn--it lied.

What is 'virtue'? What is 'sin'?

Do we ever get to know?

People preach, People preach,

'God said Thou shalt not lie."

Do they follow Leviticus 19:11,

When they sing white lies

To keep those straight white collars?

People preach, People preach

'God said Truth alone triumphs'

Does it count though?

They know 'truth', We know 'truth'--

What about the truth?

'They lie, They deceive, They hate!'

We scream.

But when it's our turn, we scramble.

"Fix those collars folks!

Smooth those creases,

No time to wash, just paint em' white!

It's time to 'pray', Time to 'preach'."

That's all we manage to say.
