It’s easy to say spread your wings. My life suddenly flies to me sitting in Spain screaming Ole; a sailor whisking me off to Oporto to taste the barrels of wine rolling down the river or sniff lavender in the fields of rural Portugal; a Count without a castle sharing a bench with me overlooking the sea on the cliff of Clovelly, knowing we still need our walking sticks for the steep climb down to delectable scones and cream at the shop because his Rolls is just not allowed…

That is spreading my wings.

Or so I thought.

But it’s hard to hear a strong woman cry tonight.

Her tears tell me about family: A daughter she moved closer to after 16 years who still loses it with her mom; a granddaughter who pulls up her nose at Ouma’s ‘old age home’ flat – and I hear my very stubborn friend’s defences.

And that’s when I spread my wings.

Much further than a painted mural would allow me to: I told her to open hers.

Open it not only in the splendour behind you. Open it fully and fold it around them.

Envelop your people – and just love them in that space.

Tell them you’re there, with just plain love. Yours. No judgment; no anger; just you.

It’s a journey but keep your wings wrapped.

They’re going to hurt you; many times. But they’ll heal and I’ll be here for you.

The years of abuse, the toxic past will climb into every feather of your love.

But you can shake it off.

Because you spread your wings.
