spouse of ravens
Ravens has worn my ring longer than any lover ever could
my first suitor, my oldest bedmate,
a presence that settled in my ribs
before I knew the shape of my mothers face.
It has never left me for someone easier.
Never turned away when I grew heavy.
Its love is the only one that has survived
every version of myself I have rotted.
I fed it with my blackend roses,
given it rooms in my chest to roam,
let it braid itself into my spine
until I could no longer feel.
We have kept house together, the ravens and I.
they know the yellowed silk of my sheets,
the desperate prayers of my eyes,
The way I curl into myself like a woman
as if I were anything more than a
starveing dog.
It holds me in the darkest nights
when no one else will
kisses my red, swollen cheeks.
not flinching at my worn-down fangs
But it sharpens itself to meet them.
And I have loved it back.
loved so even the heavens weeped at my soul.
I have carved it into my skin like scripture,
woven it into every poem I have ever written,
made it the altar where I lay my offerings.
But now I am trying to leave it.
leave my heart of stars!
so Now I am betraying my lamb-eyed love
for a foreign invader, a molded saint,
a enemy that does not know
the sound of my heartbeat.
Small silvers dissolve on my tongue
each one a coin paid to the ferryman,
Each one a key turned in a lock.
I am divorcing the only thing
that has ever held me with both hands.
And I do not know
if I am walking toward healing
or just a different kind of rot.
But the pills keep coming
these pale strangers dressed as holy men,
these small white stones I swallow
like a praye i weep.
to speak in a language I do not understand.
is it peace?
I am unfaithful to my lover.
I am leaving the only care
who ever promised to stay.
even as I swallow,
even as I betray,
I know the lamb lover will still be there
when I return.
