SONG OF THE METRO MAN

The beauty of the Milky Way is really hard to beat,

But even it cannot outshine a pulsing, well-lit city street.

I just hate retiring early; have no wish to see the dawn;

Am active still at midnight, because I’m truly city-born.

Rippling fount in hilly fold or splashing pond in urban squares?

The former leaves me cold; the latter’s music to my ears.

Who needs the sound of ocean’s roar or mighty river’s flood?

The roar of Newlands’ rugby fans does more to stir my blood.

The squeak of bats and rodents, mating calls of creatures wild,

These hold not charms, but terrors, for me a city child.

Speedy Porsches, Mercs and Jaguars give me a greater thrill

Than the sight of lions or cheetahs racing to make a kill.

Agoraphobia is no dreaded state, so I often fast retreat

To the noise, the rush, the safety of a crowded urban street.

Florescent, to my metro mind, is fluorescent - just misspelled:

Neon lights are the prettiest flowers my eyes have yet beheld.

Give me built-up places, full of businessmen and city chicks.

I need bustle, fun, excitement - not hayseeds or country hicks.

So I’m never going to rusticate in a lonely, rural spot.

Metropoles are vibrant places. I’m well pleased with my fine lot!
