Smile At Me

By Peter Ellis

Don’t smile at me

Yeah, like that

I mean it!

You think you know

What you’re doing

But I worry

For whomever holds my heart next

Does it still have the same appeal?

No matter its weight

Mishandled gold diminishes value

Some things can’t buff out with polish

But maybe that’s okay

If we ever find ourselves together

And I say those three words

We all long to hear

Know it didn’t take a village

It took wars

And the only winner and loser

Was me

You might need to pull me out

Of my head

Now and then

But I know I’ll be alright

When I see you

Smile at me
