Shiny

A storybook for children

To my cousins, Benny and Tom Tom

There once was a little shiny black beetle on my wall.

I took a closer look and realised that he had a tiny little face.

He had a hard shiny shell that protected his little stomach.

He had thin antennas growing out of his head and small black dots for eyes

As I picked him up his little legs tickled my fingers while he walked slowly around, adventuring my fingertips.

He looked at me with hope and I thought I saw a smile.

His shiney back faced me, but I soon realised his hard shiny shell was covering his beautiful little wings.

“Goodbye shiny!” I shouted as he flew away into the wind, never to be seen again.

Everyday when I walk in the fields I look for that certain little shiny beetle, hoping we can meet again.

And whenever we do I wonder if he'll ever look at me with his tiny black eyes ever again.
