Shifting

By Emily D'Addieco

Making wishes on a black hole

We choose to break the mold

Not to do what we are told

To be the one the sole witness

To the eternal and ever humming cosmic fitness

Speckled stars and dragon breath holding the infinite

journey in with your desires

Fly high with the high fliers

Ability beyond the one thing we have always known

This world of compression

Squeezing the life out of us

One day at a time

This paradigm takes away the force of living

A cruel world bleak and unforgiving

But if we can write we might survive tonight

if we wish we may we wish we might

So much beauty and horror

So ironic and magnetic

The sweet sound of dying and the beautiful silence of living

To just disappear into a moment or into your mind

It feels safer there

an internal universe just like the one above

Take it all the doubt and sadness and shove

Shove it down the well

Lassie will come

The world reaches an even sum
