Shattered Hearts

To live, to die

What does it mean?

To fight, to give in

Are they the same?

This heavy anchor in my heart

It pulls and pulls and knows no bounds

It tears and rips and cuts and strips

A ravaging beast consuming my will

Shredded and torn, what is it now?

Broken glass or pieces

Of a puzzle unsolved

Who dares to rise up to the challenge

To heal that which was once whole

Damned are those who’ve suffered in life

Whose broken pieces taunt and tease

‘What will you do?’ they sneer aloud

‘Fix or drown

In your shattered heart?’

Choosing to live and choosing to die

That

Is the hardest decision one must make

To fight, to give in

Is there a choice?

Aren’t they one and the same?

To live and be destroyed

By a world too cruel, by a heart too frail

To die and be consumed

By the darkness that devours you

Where is the line

That divides these hells

One outside, the other burning within?

To live, to die

To fight, to give in

‘What should I do, what must I do?’

I ask, I beseech, my shattered heart

To no avail, it never responds

Its firm resolve

Now long gone.
