Sand Castle

A poem by SVM Mazo

Sometimes, a promise, one can compare

To a castle made of sand

So frail it crumbles in despair,

At the lightest touch of a hand

Or by the gentlest blow of the Zephyr air,

Even then, it might not stand

The ebullient tides of a feckless love

In truth, its mortal enemy

For when it swells to kiss the shore

The castle sand shall surely fall

So, before love is sworn, a sacred pact

Compelling our hearts and will to act

Let us stop to ponder if our love is pure

If ever we part ways, will it still endure?

Once, two hearts did to each other swear

A love eternal, beyond compare

But a vow revealed to be a mere sand castle,

Ephemeral as the shifting sands, swift to unravel

So, before we take the oath of love avowed

Sacred and divine, in our souls endowed

Let us but contemplate, if our love is chaste

If ever it is lost, shall we still find each other’s embrace?

Once, two hearts were sworn to a love sublime,

A vow to last the end of time

But as a sand castle is swept out to sea

Such a pledge can never be

Temporal, it cannot last

With tears destined for us to cast

Such was our love that fate did bring

A fallen sand castle, a ruined, broken thing.
