Salem: The City Where My Heart Resides

Updated: Jan 27

By Rizwanulla A

Salem is the city of steel,

The moment I think of the city, my painful heart starts to heal,

Because my heart pumps blood toward the old golden memory wheel;

With a sound mind of enthusiastic energy feel,

And a peaceful soul of positive zeal.

Salem is located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu,

And the city is the home to the famous hill station 'Yercaud',

When I was 4 years old, I stood at the cliff of the hill;

Listening to the beauties of the greeneries and the top hill view of the city with a thrill,

With a cool breeze touching my pupil, that focuses the reflection of the beautiful city of cold mist fill.

Salem is surrounded by hills on all sides,

Nagaramalai on the north and Jarugumalai on the south, besides,

Kanjamalai on the west and Godumalai on the east, which are covered by mist;

These hills contain dense forests and the mighty iron ore reserves,

And on the foothills of Shervaroy, lies the city of Salem.

Salem is the home to the mighty Mettur Dam,

It was named after the then Governor of Madras as the Stanley Reservoir,

And on the foothills of Nagaramalai, lies my High School;

Once there were many birds including an Emu in the Cages,

But years later, the disappearance of the Emu remains a mystery for ages.

Salem was the first district to be formed in India,

The city, where my grandparents' home is located,

The place where I used to spend my childhood vacations that were awaited;

Once there lived the tree of Java Apple that was relocated,

But it dried to form a lifeless wood and my hope faded.

Salem is the city of Mango,

On the foothills of Shervaroyan Hills, lies a Zoological Park,

Once there was a family of Rabbits with its charming little kits;

On the way to Yercaud, lies the sharp turns of dark,

Likewise, the sharp turns in your life will teach you, what it really means to be a good Human being.
