Requiem for Bliss
By Suraj Rupavate
Caramel skin, empty eyes.
A smile on her face that’s how she lies.
A dream so big, and yet so small,
She fails to fly, she fears she’ll fall.
But your wings are soft and great! You ought to soar up high!
She just says that she just can’t, she never says why.
Caramel skin, empty eyes.
A bed of thorns under empty skies.
A long bright day, to dusk it turns,
The cold dusk longs for the day to return.
She is the dusk, gentler than the night,
Unfolding her mysteries, captivating my sight.
Caramel skin, tearful eyes.
It broke me when I heard she cried the whole night.
Love is pain, love is agony, love is being alone,
And those who break hearts like glass never know what they have sown.
She’s hurt and tired, not broken, she’s fierce and she’s bold.
Her heart’s not fragile or made of glass, it’s made of grit and gold.
Caramel skin, innocent eyes.
She speaks as if she’s guilty of a thousand crimes.
I detest this arraignment she brings upon herself,
I would stop this if I could, if only she asked for help.
I would try a thousand times and ask nothing in exchange.
She laughs, she shrugs and she doubts because she finds it strange.
Caramel skin, watchful eyes.
Her walls so high, they touch the skies.
She feels so safe, so warm inside,
A testament of her will and pride.
Yet sometimes, I steal a glimpse of her lovely smile.
It makes all my suffering and waiting worthwhile.
Caramel skin, alluring eyes.
She left me with a smile when she gazed at my eyes.
I felt so lucky. I felt her grace.
For a moment, it was the right time and the right place.
For destiny arrives when destiny is due,
For now, I see her, she see me too.
Caramel skin, eyes full of life.
Got cut and stabbed in the back with a knife.
Shaken, broken, brought down to his knees,
He longed to be touched by the twilight breeze.
But the breeze eludes him and it cursed him to yearn.
It cursed him to live, to live and to burn.
And burn he did with nothing to hide,
It left him charred and dark inside.
Caramel skin, anxious eyes.
A dazzling smile, a good disguise.
They talk. They laugh.
He’s different because he doesn’t task her,
It takes every drop of courage in him to ask her.
I know someday we would be whole,
Until then, would you walk with a boy with a numb soul?
A walk they will share, just not today.
All the sorrow and pain washed away.
A bud of faith from the ashes will rise,
To see her fly under the starry skies.
