Promise of a Reflection

My reflection is requesting for its freedom

It doesn’t bang against the glass

It doesn’t yell at me or scream in anger

It gently asks for me to pull it out the mirror

I talk with my reflection about many things

It’s my favorite reflection to talk to

When it asks why I haven’t released it yet

I always tell it the same answer

The doctor told you to not let me free

My reflection never responds to me

But it talks and I respond

It never registers my responses

My reflection is comfortable with me

It does whatever it wants right in front of me

Doesn’t question my reaction or words

At times I think my reflection thinks me fake

It asks for freedom all the time

It wants to come on my side of the mirror

But it never takes my extended hand

It talks about its doctor that says not to come

I want them to join me

Why won’t they come here

They aren’t crazy just like I’m not crazy

Don’t listen to the doctor

My reflection should cross the mirror

My reflections have crossed over before

Why won’t my favorite reflection come over

The one is even asking to come here

I won’t bang against the glass

I won’t yell at you or scream in anger

Don’t listen to the doctor but come here

Don’t act a fool and cross over

Cross over the mirror

That side doesn’t matter

Join me on this side

Everything will be solved once you do

To me this poem represents a part of yourself you keep hidden. That part of yourself could be anything about you but it someting that doctors advise you not to be. It’s a part of yourself that you still look back on, reflect upon, even though you shouldn’t . Often when people are trying to change or have to change they still long for the comfort they had as their old self.

Interesting poem. I feel like it’s expressing the idea of having to keep your true self locked away because society won’t accept the true you. Now I’m wondering if the reflection is the true you or not.

Guess you could say you’re talking to the man in the mirror.
