PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL, TRUE?

The highway,a silver snake quivering and winding under the one-eye Jack in the sky seemed to threaten me to slow down.Interestingly, I was down here on the road, in the cozy Porsche 911 vented to challenge the relentless heat , piercing through the air to prove a point.

The powerful turbo whined to a metallic squeal through the exhaust, this fast-lane racer halted in front of a figure–my father. His eagle-eyes zoomed on the machine first, then his watch and finally his bewitched son. In silence he turned, went into the house without a word with me following suit. Mum cast him a submissive look which quickly subdued the silent dominance in the room.

The overwhelming feat on land and the inflated pride prompted perhaps an exploit in the air! An advertisement vacancy called for a trapeze acrobat filled that search. They roped me in. The perfect velvet trapeze costume made me look like a carnival king. The way their eyes glued on the reflection on the mirror told me, “This is it !”The debut was a powerful shot to the audience. Each glide on the tight rope earned an “Ooh” and “Wow” from below in the arena. They were mesmerised by my undeniable physical appeal which commanded respect. The roaring applause burst the atmosphere. Continuously, every night was a ‘sold out’. My aerobatic aerial acts of from a glide, leap then swings from end to end generated intense buzz.

Then that fateful day finally arrived .As I was sprawling exhaustedly and spontaneously toying in my mind what dare-devil stunts to flaunt myself in the next performances when there was a soft knock on the door. A limping figure behind a huge bouquet of red roses entered, muttering, “Another gift from your admirer.” I signalled to let the flowers rest on a chair as all space were laiden with presents. A whisper from the deliverer startled me from my snooze. “Can I have a red rose from your bouquet?”

“Take whatever you want.”

“I was ……”

I sat up and stared as he continued to mutter “You are so kind. I was like you once before disaster struck, I fell …… Pride hurts.”

His words struck me with grief. Was he God sent? I gathered my Pride and quit.
