Positive

It touched a tender part that many said would never heal,

the scar it left was my badge,

worn proudly to safeguard my heart.

It broke through the iron bars of my defences.

I was powerless as it claimed me as its own.

Paradise turned dark as night as it ripped my heart from my chest,

the word positive became a dirty reminder of seemingly happy moments,

now my nightmare.

I scribbled intelligent words on blackboards,

held young, inspired minds in the palm of my hands.

My own ignorance exposed,

sprawled like a crucified truth against a blackboard.

Nothing left to teach,

everything else to learn.

Reinvent the word positive in HIV Positive,

align it with an attitude that will keep my spirit alive.

I had to learn as I lived,

I had to live what I taught.

To not be imprisoned by a disease that chose me when I chose betrayal disguised as

love,

to break through barriers of discrimination and emerge as a victor,

and not a victim.

To use my voice as a teacher to reach young,

impressionable minds.

It shattered my dreams for a minute,

I’ll steal an hour from life to repair the broken pieces and dream anew.

Ugly labels emerged from every corner,

when I spoke the words aloud.

But the only word I steal from HIV is positive,

positive mind,

positive spirit,

positive influence,

positive living.
