Pink Palaces & Skies Alike

Most call Rajasthan the pink city for its architecture, I call Rajasthan the pink city for its sky. Rajasthani skies wear a brilliant pink from time to time. Particularly in honour of the sunrise and sunset. These skies are famous throughout India and it is not uncommon to see tourists travelling across from all the states to see the sunset point in Jaisalmer or Naharghar fort in Jaipur.

Science has an explanation for this colour of the sky as it does for everything. They tell me that it’s because the atmosphere carries fine dust particles, that the larger particles scatter the red light of sunsets and sunrises, spreading a dreamy pastel glow across the horizon. But I have a different theory. I think that Rajasthan has a pink sky in honour of Rajasthan’s great abundancy of love stories. Meerabai and Krishna, Dhola and Maru, Heera and Ranmal. Perhaps the sky got so used to blushing as it watched these lovers that it developed a permanent flush, like the reddening cheek of a young bride.

Rajasthan is a slightly melancholic land, with its affinity for tales about star crossed lovers. Nearly every story I’ve heard from here has a tragic ending. But it is also the land of the brave. It is also home to the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard

Rajasthan is a land of many colours, and my favourite is pink.
