Persephone's Returns

By Archismita Das

Today it was raining heavily,

Though it was not yet time!

Then everyone realised steadily,

That this was something divine.

Persephone was returning,

At last, at long last!

The sun would be shining brightly,

And food supply would be vast.

Though most don’t understand,

Who is Persephone? What does it mean?

It basically means spring is coming,

The beauty of spring shall now be seen.

Persephone was a beautiful girl,

With blue eyes like the sky.

Her pink cheeks like apple blossoms

Caught the attention of Hades’ eye.

Her mother was Demeter, Goddess of Grain,

Her father was Zeus - the sky was his domain.

One day she was dancing, bedecked with flowers,

Then she was abducted, unhappy for hours.

Dementer went to Zeus,

As he was the one who had

The power to return Persephone,

The power to bring her back.

Zeus made a pact with Hades,

Stating that, for six months each year,

Persephone would be with him.

This time Demeter shed a tear.

The rest of the year Persephone

Would rise to the Earth once more,

Frolicking, dancing  and singing,

On fields she’d loved before.

And that is how, my dear reader,

The ancient Greeks presumed,

The cycle of seasons goes on and on,

Like an infinite loop.

Now you know, my gentle friends,

The tale of Persephone's Returns.

Remember well, and never forget,

The lesson the earth still learns.
