“Bang bang, there goes your heart,"

Algoa FM plays

over the evening cacophony

The day's work is done

Born Frees showered in counterfeit cologne

line up in shops and bus stops

performing poise

We are the prospective elite

chasing elusive childhood dreams

Single parents and breadwinners,

the shortchanged graduates, and

the bright-eyed freshers,

the fuckboys and the slay queens,

iinceku namalungisa,

oblivious to our likeness

Hearts trapped behind badges,

wrists in bangles,

bent knees on heels

Still grasping for freedom….
