Pavements

Across the street, I walk

dog on a leash, outside a door

whimping and gazing at pedestrians

glancing at it, I recollect the days

the shifts at the barn; haystacks and horse feeds

neighing horses and rattling autumn leaves

late october winds brushing all of them

outside the door on a fine blazing dusk

golden husks amid the vast greens

ruby streaks of strati clouds towards the horizon

dogs are unlike horses, leashed and well-fed

aren’t gambled upon as much as horses

in races and circuses

just wagging the tail, at the moment

at the humans, the tailless beings

and that hit straight at my head

as I saw another pooch on the pavement

wagging its tail, panting

eyes gleaming in some thought

at me.
