Wearing that beautiful smile,
Waving her hand towards me,
She was waiting for me all the while,
When I entered the diner quietly.
Outside it was beginning to rain,
The wind grew all the more strong;
She had to board the next train:
My time with her would not last long.
Her birthday gift still in my arms---
I walked on the pavement alone:
The blue sky had lost all its charms,
The cold air made a sweet moan.
Stealing the sights that I knew,
The train left the platform grey,
Shrill and harsh the whistle blew---
The world wore the shroud of the day.
