One of a Kind

By Carol Ann Wells

So, are you everything that you would like to be?

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see?

Now look closer, past the mask, behind the shuttered eyes,

into the depths of your soul where the real you resides.

Are you bruised and badly broken, scarred, lonely, afraid,

disappointed, unfulfilled by the life that you made?

We’re all broken, imperfect, have things that we regret;

things we want to do or be that we haven’t as yet.

But the Lord made you special. You are one of a kind;

how you feel, how you see things, the workings of your mind.

Just as the beat of your heart is uniquely yours too,

like a fingerprint, no one has the same beat as you.

Every bit of your body, each bit of your soul

was formed by our creator, to suit your special role.

A unit from the start, God is one, and one of three:

Father, Son, and Spirit are the Holy Trinity.

God’s filled to overflowing with love, and he so yearns,

as our father to love and to be loved in return.

He’s no tyrant; the Lord will not force you to obey.

He won’t demand you love him if you don’t feel that way.

He knows love is not love if it’s not freely given,

and to live without loving, is not really living.

And the Lord loves you deeply, with all of his being,

loves the you, heart wide open, soul bared, he is seeing.

Yes, the Lord knows you better, even better than you.

For he knows everything that you think, feel, and do.

He knows everywhere you’ve been and how far you have come.

He is who your looks and personality come from.

He gave us free will, thereby, allowing us to choose.

But it’s a gift that we invariably abuse.

We give in when we’re tempted and do things that aren’t right;

our souls, stained and corrupted, an unsavory sight.

But God’s forgiveness and grace are there for everyone,

through the death and resurrection of God’s only son.

And so all who will choose to repent and to believe

are adopted by the father, and each will receive

gifts of peace, rejuvenation, and strength to get through,

your redemption, salvation, God’s Spirit in you.

And God also gives you all you are, what you can do;

what you work to become is your gift to God from you.

But becoming isn’t something you do on your own.

God would never expect you to do it alone.

As a child of God, you should always give it your all,

but God will catch you each time that you stumble and fall.

And he will lift you right up with his righteous right hand,

Help you soar to the highest heights, and then gently land.

With God, you’ll do more than you ever dreamed you could do,

And you can help others become as God helps all to.

We’re God’s children, that makes us all sisters and brothers

meant to help, to encourage, and love one another.

For a church is much more than just a roof and four walls.

It’s God’s children gathering in response to his call.

For we are each an intricate, valuable part

of a unit that’s in sync with the beat of God’s heart.

So be the one of a kind that God made you to be;

a unique, beloved member of God’s family.
