Oh, Wild Child

​Oh, wild child,

Why try so hard to be tamed?

You are a fox who begs for the life of a dog,

A vulture who cannot clip its wings

To squeeze into a pigeon’s skin.

​Oh, wild child,

You could never learn a citizen's stride—

It is in your nature to bite,

And it is not your fault that

You pull against your golden collar,

Confused by how the others wear theirs with pride.

​Oh, wild child,

You mimic coos with a choked-up throat,

Trying to learn the house-pet's art,

But you cannot drown your horrific blasphemous howling note,

Which pours out your mouth as a violent waterfall.

​My dearest, darling child,

Do not weep because you tear

The leash and garden gate.

You cannot breathe their indoor air,

Or shrink to fit their narrow, selfish slate.

You must consume.
