Oh, to Meet a Yearner

I want someone

who is embarrassingly pleased to see me.

Not theatrically.

Not the sort who arrives with flowers

large enough to require their own seat.

I mean the little things.

The second glance.

The unnecessary message

sent because something reminded him of me

and apparently that was reason enough

to interrupt his day.

The way he would keep a story

because he knows I would laugh at it.

The way he would remember

that I take my coffee a certain way

without ever making a ceremony of learning it.

I want a man who collects details

the way some people collect receipts—

without realising he has been keeping them

until one day he produces one

and I think,

You noticed that?

Oh, to meet a yearner.

Someone who doesn’t merely want

to know where I am,

but wonders what I am doing there.

Who sees an empty chair beside him

and thinks it has my name on it.

Who makes room for me

before I ask.

Someone who can spend an entire afternoon with me

doing absolutely nothing worth reporting

and somehow remembers it

better than the grand occasions.

I don’t want to be adored

like an idea.

I want to be known

like a person.

My odd habits.

My unnecessary opinions.

The food I always order

and then regret ordering.

The stories I tell badly.

The moods I pretend aren’t moods.

And still—come here.

Not because I am easy.

Not because I am convenient.

Simply because,

among all the places he could be,

he keeps finding reasons

to be beside me.

That is the kind of yearning

I think I could live with.

Not the ache of wanting someone

who keeps slipping away,

but the ridiculous, ordinary privilege

of being wanted

in the middle of someone’s Tuesday.

Honestly—

what a luxury.

To be someone’s

“I thought you’d like this.”

Someone’s

“Are you already home?”

Someone’s

“I’m downstairs.”

Someone’s

“You would hate this place.”

Someone’s

“Come with me.”

And perhaps the most romantic thing of all:

to have someone

who has no particularly poetic reason

for wanting you near—

except that

the day is simply better

when you’re in it.
