Obese

If you’ve really, really let yourself go

‘til doing is hard and painfully slow.

Your weight has so drastically increased,

your medical records say you’re obese.

Ambition is gone. You just want to rest.

Moving exhausts you. You can’t catch your breath.

Helpless and hopeless, you try, and you fail

to lower the number of pounds on the scale:

fad diets, aerobics, workout machines

girdles, black clothes, surgical extremes.

You’re so out of shape. Your health’s such a mess.

Your body is bulging. You’re playing with death.

The battle is more than what foods you ate.

It’s the thoughts in your head that destroy or create.

Choose to surrender or get on your feet.

Take control of what you do, and what you eat.

Every day you continually choose

To see and respond to behavioral cues.

The circumstances and times when the urge

overwhelms you to eat, to binge or to splurge,

figure what triggers that huge appetite,

and what craving you’re serving bite after bite.

Avoid triggers that cause a frenzied feed.

Find another way to meet that driving need.

‘Cause not just physical hunger binds you,

it’s the needs crying out from deep inside you:

a need for rewards, connection, control,

for comfort, for love, for solace for your soul.

It’s hard to control this hunger alone,

lacking discipline to do it on your own.

You need someone for support and respite

from the downward spiral of your appetite,

to help figure out the actual need

that’s never satisfied when you madly feed.

And when the raging hunger takes control,

don’t focus it, you’ll strengthen its hold.

When it’s so dark that it robs you of sight,

you don’t fight the darkness, you turn on the light.

Turn your thoughts in another direction,

away from temptation, make other selections.

Something that accurately satisfies

the actual need that, from within you, cries.

God is able to meet your every need,

giving you strength to overcome and succeed.

Pray to God for insight, motivation,

let Christ take your burdens, give you salvation.

With Him you’ll not hunger or thirst for more

As your creator, it’s you he adores.

He’ll satisfy you, from death set you free,

Give you hope, peace, joy, and love eternally.
